How to Flush Your Water Heater Tank

Do you want better performance from your water heater? Do you want to pay for fewer repairs and replacements? Regular water heater maintenance extends your system's lifespan and maintains efficiency, and flushing the tank is one of the most important maintenance tasks you can perform. Sediment from minerals in your water naturally settles at the bottom of the tank over time, reducing heating efficiency and potentially causing damage. Flushing removes this buildup and should be done at least once a year, or more often if you have hard water.

Start by turning off the power to your water heater at the circuit breaker for electric units, or setting the thermostat to pilot mode for gas units. Next, shut off the cold water supply valve at the top of the tank. Attach a garden hose to the drain valve near the bottom of the tank and run the other end to a floor drain, outside drainage area, or large bucket. Open the drain valve and let the water flow out until it runs clear. If sediment has built up significantly, the water will initially look dirty or cloudy. You may need to briefly open the cold water supply valve a few times during draining to help stir up stubborn sediment.

Once the water runs clear, close the drain valve, remove the hose, and turn the cold water supply back on. Let the tank refill completely, then restore power or return the gas setting to its normal position. If your drain valve doesn't close properly after flushing, or if you notice any leaks or other concerns, it's time to call in the professionals.
